Curly Hair Cuts - Fun Way to Maintain Your Curls

Curly and wavy hair has long been associated with many positive attributes - fun, romantic, flirty, spontaneous and stylish to name a few. Celebrities such as Julia Roberts have made this style popular and although that was back in the late eighties or early nineties, curly hair, whether it be natural or not has continued to be popular with women until this day. It is a well known fact that curly hair bouncing away in all its glory turns heads - repeatedly.

Ladies lucky to have natural curly locks often wish for straight hair and naturally straight haired women dream of curls. The good news is that whatever the current condition of your hair - you can have beautiful curls if you know the secrets on how to maintain them and wear them to their full potential. Those of you with a natural curl to have a head start, and the following tips can apply to everyone.

The Right Cut - Curly hair looks best when left to grow long. Longer hair adds weight, which can naturally tame wild curls. Choosing a good hairdresser (look for one with curly hair!), will be very beneficial. Curly hair is not easy to cut by yourself and a professional will cut in layers to prevent 'pyramid hair', instead creating soft curls to shape around your face.

Washing and Drying - Curly and wavy hair is usually drier than straight hair. It can also be more brittle so it is important to maintain levels of the hair's natural oils. Try not to wash the hair every day - two or three times a week is perfectly adequate for a curly head.

Go for ones that are specially formulated to your hair type when choosing shampoos and conditioners. The better ones will lock in moisture and help to prevent further damage from styling. When drying, press the hair lightly with a towel at first and then apply some serum before leaving it to dry naturally. Hair driers should be used in moderation.

Diminishing Frizz - Frizz is one of the biggest problems a curly girl will face. By simply using a wide-toothed comb or afro comb rather than a brush, the curly girl can avoid destroying curls and limit frizz. Using heat to style the hair can be the cause of frizz.

If you absolutely can't get away with not using a hairdryer, put it on the coolest setting and apply a protecting balm beforehand. If you have a diffuser - use it! Straighteners can also be damaging to the hair and should not be used more than once a week. Anyway, you should love your curls and want to work with them rather than flatten them. If you are determined to straighten your hair on occasions then choose a good pair of ionic straighteners such as the GHD range.

On bad hair days just remind yourself that your chaotic mop of curls might be perceived as wildly beautiful by someone else. Girls with straight hair will envy your curls, so if they come naturally to you, be proud and consider yourself very lucky.
