Hair Dilemma: Romantic Involvement With Your Stylist - A Hair Disaster,Solution,Tips And Hair Care

There are many things in life that I don't give the slightest thought to.  Whether someone should get  romantically involved with their hairdresser is one of those things that I just never really think about.
Until recently.
I received an email from a very distraught young woman who titled her email "major hair emergency".
Thinking that she had suffered through some horrendous home hair coloring event or been unhappily chemically altered by a perm or straightening treatment, I prepared to offer cuticle recovery assistance.
I was surprised when her hair emergency turned out to be a sticky situation involving a romantic relationship that she was having with her hairstylist of one year.
It seems that the young lady was the last appointment of the day on a Saturday evening and somehow found herself having drinks and dinner with her personal hair guy.  One thing led to another, they fell in love and started living together.

The problem you ask?  Well for starters, there are all those other women that her guy hangs out with.  You know, the ones that her beau cuts, colors and styles for his livelihood.  All of those other ladies have made this young woman wildly jealous and progressively more miserable.  It doesn't help that her hairdresser love's last three serious relationships were all started with current hair clients.  Even worse is the fact that none of them lasted more than a few years.
Although this situation may not seem like a serious problem, they are also fighting bitterly over her hair color, length and style.  When she was just his hair client, she could exert her personal desires over her hair.
Now that she's living with him, her hairdresser will only create the color and styles that he thinks she should have.  Although she's miserable with her current hairstyle but he will not listen to her pleas to change it.
When he found out that she was considering going to a new hairstylist he accused her of cheating on his hairdressing activities with her.  Showing up with a new cut or color is something that she obviously can't hide.
She is also quite stressed by the fact that every time she visits her sweetie at his salon, he is surrounded by women that she is convinced are waiting in line for her ultimate relationship demise.
Even worse, she fears that if she ends the relationship he will no longer do her hair, and before their romantic involvement, he was the best hairdresser she ever found in her life.

What's A Girl To Do?

Obviously I am not a couples counselor that can offer romantic advice.  I did volunteer to provide my own opinions but cautioned that all advice was based solely on my personal perspective.
I suggested that this troubled young woman immediately find a good counselor that she work with to try and resolve some of her conflicts about his work, his control of her hair and his female clientele.
I pointed out that if she could work out her own issues regarding the relationship, everyone might just live happily ever after.  If things couldn't be resolved, I suggested that maybe she could convince him to go to a couples counselor to discuss their joint issues.

The ending was not a happy one.  Although the young lady did go to counseling, she was not able to resolve many of the problems.  Her guy refused to participate in joint counseling and they ultimately broke up.  She is currently searching for a new stylist but will only consider a female for her next hair care professional.
The morale to this story?  While there probably are many happy couples around the globe that started with as a hairdresser and their client, it may not always have a happy ending.  Just like getting romantically involved with someone at work or at your church, consider what the long term impact will be if you become intimate.  Think what will happed to your ability to continue to work with your valued hairstylist.  What happens if things don't work out?  Will you be able to still work together?
If you do take the plunge, consider immediately finding a different hairstylist in a new salon to work with your hair.  This action will prevent some of the problems that the young lady in question experienced with her hairdressing guy.
Life can throw us into unexpected situations and getting involved with your hairdresser is one of them.

Hair Stencils Spin Up Your Hair With Glitter, Color and Jewels Review and Care Tips

You may have been working on ways to really change out your look.  Or you may really want to WOW your friends with a hot new look that is completely original.  You don't want to spend a fortune and you don't want the cool new look to be anything but temporary. (Leopard spots were created in an elaborate hair design to the side)

Hair stencils are your answer to creating a smashing new look that can be jazzed up for a formal event like a special party, Prom or wedding, or they can be just fun and wild.

Hair stenciling allows you to create and apply temporary designs, hair paints and glitter to your hair.  Although hair stencils tend to generally work better with shorter hair, they can be creatively applied to just about any length of hair and any color.

One thing is guaranteed.  No one will be able to copy your unique design. If you hand make your own hair pattern and select a wild range of temporary hair colors and snap on jewels or glitter, you will have fun, look fantastic and be your own hairstyle trend setter.

Steps For Creating Hair Stencils

The only limit to the type, size, shape and number of hair stencils that you create are in your imagination.  (The stencil below was done by Charles Worthington to honor the breast cancer ribbon.  This is a complicated stencil design).
It may not be as easy the very first time but like any work of art, experimenting can turn you into a pro in short order. Follow the steps below to begin creating your own fantasy hairstyles:

STEP 1 - In order to maintain good control over the stencil, make a series of patterns from flat cardboard like materials.  Large plastic lids from margin tubs or related products are other alternatives. Use any design that you like keeping in mind your level of experience.  Most beginners might consider starting with simple designs like flowers, stars and hearts that are easier to apply.  As you evolve you can experiment with different patterns shapes and materials.
Note:  It works best if you draw the image with a pen or marker and then cut out the design into the plastic or cardboard.

STEP 2 - Shampoo your hair with the appropriate shampoo for your hair type.  Follow with rinse out conditioner or a good leave in conditioner to give your hair some protection from the various colors, glitters or gels you might add to create your ultimate stencil.

STEP 3 - Use a blow dryer and dry your hair straight or to your desired texture. Make sure that hair is 100% dry before adding any paints, gels or glitters. Hair tattoos and stencils show up best on straight hair or in parts.  If you wish to wear your hair wavy or curly keep in mind how the stencil will be ultimately incorporated into your style.

STEP 4 - Have an assistant help you to plan out where to place the stencil pattern on your hair.  Once you have agreed upon the placement, apply the medium of your choice. Remember to use any sprays or chemicals in a place that is well ventilated.  Keep your face turned away and your eyes closed at all times during application.

Maniac Panic were created by Tish & Snooky who are the pioneers of punk colors.  The MP colors can be applied to the stencil opening with a paintbrush.  Remember that if your hair is naturally dark that certain colors will be less visible than other.  Apply the Manic Panic, decorate with tiny rhinestones or colored glitter and then set the design with light hair spray.

Wedding Hairstyle Review And Tips

Hair enhances our personality and it is important to style it in a manner that really makes you look and feel beautiful, especially on your wedding day. There are so many different types of wedding hairstyles for the bride so start planning ahead. While choosing, take into account the bridal dress and the theme you have chosen for your wedding. Here are a few ideas for exploring the various types of wedding hairstyles that may be right for you.
Long slender graceful necks are accentuated by an upsweep type of hairstyle. This wedding hairstyle is also ideal if you have chosen a high neck bridal gown, as you will be able to show more detail that lies on the top half of the dress. The disadvantage for this hairstyle is that your hairdresser would have had to put in a lot of pins to hold the hair style and undoing it can be a bit of a task, especially when you want to get your hair down after the wedding for a more casual party.
If you have chosen a stylish sleeveless wedding dress with a low back then consider having your hair falling straight down the back in between the shoulders. This is a more traditional wedding hairstyle your hair can be cascading in curls or absolutely straight. Straight hairstyles look quite sleek and do not require much maintaining during the event, but it can also look a bit bland on those with a low volume or thin hair. A curly hair style is bouncy and adds volume to your hair, looking quite gorgeous. However a head full of curls will require maintaining and the hairdresser needs to be good at applying product to ensure it stays fresh all through the event.
When you have wedding hair styles for long hair that falls straight down the back, there is always the disadvantage of covering quite a bit of your bridal gown that may be encrusted in beads or have a beautiful lace bodice.
Your wedding hairstyle needs to be a careful decision including picking the right hairdresser. Many local hairdressers will say they specialize in wedding styles, but research them carefully picking only experienced professionals. Choosing the right hairdressing salon make seem a bit painstaking but its well worth the effort.
Bridal magazines and websites will have a number of photos of wedding hairstyles to use as ideas but try not to stray too far from the way you wear your hair now. Every bride wants to look unique with a striking wedding hairstyle but if you deviate too much, it may feel unusual. The hairstyle should feel as a natural extension of your complete look.
The hairstyles of you and your bridesmaids will be captured in time by a wedding photographer so choose well. Browse for ideas, decide on an up do or a more relaxed look then, with the help of a wedding style hairdressing professional, choose the overall hairstyle that best suits you.

Many wedding planning books provide a very detailed list of who should pay for what and when.  Times have changed since the late 90s and payment issues have become more flexible.  However, some expenses are still well defined.  It is still a given that the bride will pay for her own wedding gown, her groom's wedding ring and gift as well as her own personal hair and skin care expenses.
Although the bridal party and attendants have traditionally been liable for their own wedding attire and travel expenses, there is no hard and fast rule for 2002.
One new bridal planning challenge is making decisions about bridal party hair, make-up and other expenses.  Is each attendant required to pay for having their hair done for the wedding?  What is appropriate when the bride requests that all the members of her party wear their hair in a special bridal theme style?
While it may be appropriate for a bridal attendant to pay for headgear to match her wedding gear, is it appropriate to be required to pay for a special updo or a pre-wedding spa trip?

Bridal Hair Themes

Any bride's thoughts regarding a central hair or makeup theme needs to be discussed at the very beginning of the wedding planning stage.  Consideration and communication with the bridal party about hair and make-up issues are critical in deciding who should foot the bill for what services.
This topic may also be the financial dividing point for attendants that are unable to invest unlimited funds to be part of the wedding party.  If you really dream of everyone with twisted updo tresses, it is important that you say so at the beginning so your attendants have a clear picture of what is required of them both financially and otherwise.
Some bridal consultants suggest that a central hair theme is appropriate for a formal day or evening wedding, but less important for an informal or casual wedding.  Since it is more likely that a formal wedding will require a formal, floor length bridal attendant gown with matching headwear, co-ordinated hair styles would probably be very reasonable.
When Sex and the City's fearless fashionista, Carrie Bradshaw sported big, blue feathers in her bridal hairdo, the outcome was inevitable: bold wedding hair accessories made a big comeback and not just in blue!

The wedding hair accessory craze first began building momentum with big flowers, whether they were pinned behind one ear to evoke an exotic feel, or at the back, crowning a ponytail or up-do. Then feathers were thrown into the mix, adding a touch of retro flapper glam. And what about tiaras, hair combs and hair bands? Well, don't call it a comeback. They've been here for years.

Unique & Trendy Hair Wear
Along with wedding favors, bridesmaids gifts, and just about every other wedding accessory you could think of, Nuptial Celebrations also sells an assortment of bridal hair accessories

For the bride who prefers feathers for her wedding day hair flair, this matte satin hairpiece in champagne ivory makes an ideal accessory. A silver clip fastens the woven satin ribbons to the hair, while wispy feathers add a vintage feel. This piece can be worn behind one ear or nestled in a bun at the back of the hair.

How to Wear Wedding Hair Accessories

Don't mix and match. With the exception of tiaras with veils, more than one type of hair accessory shouldn't be worn at the same time. Especially when it comes to today's oversized, standout accessories.

Bring your hair accessory to your hairstylist consultation. This way, (s)he can work the accessory into your hairstyle in advance, rather than trying to figure out what to do with it on your wedding day.
Buy a backup hair accessory if its not too expensive. If your heart is set on having a specific hair accessory as part of your entire wedding day look, pick up a duplicate design to avoid a wedding day meltdown if your accessory breaks

Swarovski crystals scattered throughout the hair will give the bride a big dose of sparkle on her big day. These hair twists are shown here in pearl, and also come in 10 different colors of swarovski crystal, to match the bridesmaids dresses or wedding theme colors. With 12 twists per pack, they can be arranged in a row to resemble a a tiara, or placed around an up-do.
Berry and blossom designs evoke a very Bohemian feel on this satin floral and white pearl Halo hairpiece especially when worn with a flowing wedding day hairstyle. The Halo also accents a veil nicely, and gives the bride an ethereal look rather than the regal look the tiara lends.

Brushing Sins

I'm a bad girl when it comes to brushing. I brush top down. I know, I know, it's a sin. But hey, I gotta have some sins since I don't drink coffee. What I really like to do is bend over and start brushing at the nape of my neck. My brush usually will go for about five inches before there is some resistance. I take the brush out and start again at the nape at a slightly different spot and do another stroke until I feel resistance.

After every stoke I pass my hand over the entire length. That is usually enough so that the next stroke can go further.

You see my hair doesn't really knot; It twists, sort of like a rope or a bed sheet that hooked on the dryer door while drying. You just need to shake it a bit for the twist to start falling out.

If my hair does knot it's usually because one strand has a break in it or stranger yet, one strand has a single knot in it that the others hooked onto/into/twisted around. Then I have to pull individual strands up and out of the knot just like I do when I am separating strands of embroidery floss. When I am finally done I flip my hair up and over.

Who Pays For Attendant Hair?

Many brides opt for having a stylist come to their home and do their hair for the wedding.  This is usually after one or two hair styling rehearsals so that all the loose ends have been dealt with.

If a central hair theme has been agreed upon in advance by everyone in the bridal or wedding party, the payment issue should also be settled long before the date of the wedding.

When a central hair style like a French braid, twist or similar updo is requested, opinions are split regarding payment responsibility.  One wedding consultant suggested that the bride pay for one pre-wedding styling rehearsal as well as for the wedding day styling.

Another consultant suggested that in lieu of required attendant headgear, the bride may inquire if her bridal party members would be willing to pay for all or a portion of their hair styling services.  Some of her attendants may not balk at being requested to wear their hair in a specific style but may resent paying for it to boot.

Bridal Luncheon At The Spa

Since the trend is for many bridal parties to visit a day spa together for pre-wedding pampering, luncheons or showers, why not schedule your attendant luncheon at the spa?  Throw in a hairstyling for each member of the party as part of your special paid gift.  This allows the attendant to have a pre-wedding styling rehearsal, relax at the spa and enjoy your luncheon at the same time.

If you are planning for a stylist to come to your home and do your wedding hair, inquire about having a second stylist accompany them.  The two stylists can probably manage to handle the hair for the entire bridal party.  In this scenario the bride or her family should pick up the hair styling tab and any tips.

Keep in mind that having two stylists at your home for any length of time will be more expensive than if you all went to the salon.  However, there are many advantages that outweigh the disadvantages and the potential cost.

All wedding hair appointments must be booked way in advance.  Some salons will require a deposit to hold the date and time and the desired hairstylists.

Styling Tools As Gifts?

If you don't want the expense of holding one of more stylists captive for mass wedding hair styling, consider asking all the attendants to still do their hair at your home.  Ask them to arrive a few hours before the ceremony with clean, dry hair.  Have a light snack or luncheon available so the bridal party can relax, munch a little and help each other with their hair.

One mother of the bride recently purchased eight identical Conair hot roller kits from  In her emails to me she explained that her daughter wanted all of her attendants to have a soft curly look.  Instead of requiring the bride or her party to pay for professional stylists, the mother bought new hot rollers that were presented, along with a special Austrian crystal hair jewel as wedding gifts to the party members.  While a stylist was on hand to do the bride's hair, the rest of the attendants enjoyed using their new hot rollers to work on each other's hair.  The stylist lent a hand with a light final touch-up on stubborn strands.

The mother reported that the idea was a great success.  Not only did all the attendants look wonderful, they loved their new hot curlers that they can use for the future.

This is a wonderful example of a compromise and fair payment arrangement.  As the mother of the bride pointed out, hot rollers are a much more economical buy than what it might cost to bring in a second stylist.

Free Form Hair

If your wedding plans do not require your attendants to wear their hair in any particular style, they are responsible for any costs associated with their hair for the wedding.  While some attendants will want to have their hair done, it is purely a personal choice that they can make.

While you may request that each attendant wear the same hair jewel or flower, if you do not stipulate that they wear their hair in any special way, the hair styling expense is clearly that of the attendant.

Keep in mind that some attendants may opt to do their own hair at home.  If this poses a potential problem for you, make sure you communicate this fact at the very beginning when you select them as an attendant.

Remember that it is important to be considerate of your attendant's personalities and private wishes about their hair.  While you may think that your maid of honor would look best with a short snappy bob, she may adore her long shag.

Avoid using your status as the bride to ask anyone to change their basic hairstyle, color or look.  While they may agree to follow your wishes, they may also resent you and this could lead to long term relationship problems after the wedding is over.
Attendant Hair Adornments

If your wedding is very formal and each attendant will be required to wear a formal headpiece to match their gowns, they are expected to pay for the entire attendant outfit from shoes to gloves to headwear.

If you prefer that each attendant wear a beautiful flower in their hair, it is suggested that you pick up the tab for the flowers and consider it part of their bouquet.  Many florists can design a bouquet that matches flowers worn in the attendant's hair.

If you require a certain hair comb or barrette, while it is suggested that the bride may wish to pick up the tab, the answer is more fuzzy.  Weigh the various options and consider giving your attendants the hair adornments as your gift to them.  If they offer to pay for their own hair jewelry or adornments, be flexible and consider each individual situation.

Groom Hair

While you may wish to have input into how your groom wears his hair for the wedding, ultimately he is responsible for the cost.  Ditto for his groomsmen.  Unless the groom requires that all his attendants get dreadlock extensions or purple spikes, the groomsmen must pay for their own hair cuts and styles.

Other Hair Costs

It is usually a given that the individual mothers and close female relatives handle their own hair design and styling needs.  If you wish to ask the mothers to co-ordinate their hair and colors, be flexible and communicate your thoughts.  Let them work with you on an individual basis to make sure that they are willing to wear their hair a certain way.  Whether they pay for a special style if a matter of negotiation.

When it comes to planning wedding party hairstyles it is important to be considerate, creative and exercise good communication skills.  Although some hair styling costs are obvious, others may be more nebulous.  Keep in mind that in some cases you may be required to pay if you have very unique or special wedding hair requests.  Bottom line, be flexible and thoughtful and keep and keep an open mind.

Funky, chunky highlights can be rectified nearly overnight with another color, as long as you use the wash-in-wash-out type that aren't made to last. If you're going to play with your hair color on the weekends, never use the permanent variety and then try to reverse it in less than several weeks. If you used it too frequently, the harsher chemicals in the permanent hair colors can turn your hair to straw, and may even turn it a scary and unexpected color if you try to set more color on top of a recent dye job. .

Talking to Your Colorist
When you go to the salon to color your hair, make sure you have a clear idea of what you want -- don't leave all the decisions up the colorist, or you might be disappointed with the results.

Trends in Color
These days, pretty much anything goes when it comes to hair color. Not too long ago reds were all the rage, and everyone from movie stars to high schoolers sported a flame top. It got a little predictable, didn't it..?

Basics of Hair Colors
If you know the color wheel color becomes easy... It may sound a bit odd but your hair is a mixture of 3 colors; red, yellow, and blue. These are the primary colors. Secondary colors are orange, green, and violet. If you look at the "wheel" a color opposite (directly across) will "negate" that color. This means if your hair is a orange color - blue will make it a brown/black color. If you hair has a yellow tone, violet will cancel it out.

Hair and Pregnancy
There's been a lot of debate about coloring and perming while pregnant. Experts will tell you not to use chemical processes on your hair during the first trimester -- there's no real evidence that it can harm the fetus, but why gamble.?
